The San Gabriel mountains north of Los Angeles, that form part of the iconic LA skyline pictures, are a great place to get out of town for the day and hike and play.
These mountains contain some of the greatest biodiversity in the country, including four wilderness and unique geological features such as the San Andreas Fault. There are also hundreds of hiking trails.
Staring up at the foothills from the city it looks cracked and craggy but within its recesses are waterfalls and streams and trails to challenge the most intrepid hiker and his or her dog.
Thoughts and Things
Escaping into the mountains is a far cry from the Los Angeles city streets. Thank God there are places like this. Everyone benefits from walking in and communing with nature. Thank God for politicians that recognize the significance and necessity of protecting natural environments and the wildlife that exists within its space. The San Gabriel Mountains was designated National Monument Status in 2014.
There are many books and trail guides that explore and identify hikes in the San Gabriels. If you are a native to LA or even a visitor that wants to adventure into the mountains behind the bustle of the city, a good hiking guide is a great investment.
